RIU Ocho Rios: Reviewed for 2026 Β· Photographed in guides.

Riu ochorios β€” RIU's branding keeps it as one word internally, though most search traffic spells it Ocho Rios β€” is the chain's family-tier Jamaica property, sitting on Mammee Bay about fifteen minutes west of Ocho Rios town. Room count is around 856, making it the largest RIU in the country and one of the largest single properties on the island. The build dates to 2002 with a 2019 soft refresh.

The honest frame here is the same as the chain's other properties: volume pricing, strong beach, dated rooms, and a service culture that is functional rather than warm. What differentiates riu ochorios is that it takes families where the Montego Bay RIU Palace does not, which changes the demographic and the noise profile.

What riu ochorios offers

Seven restaurants (buffet, steakhouse, Italian, Jamaican, Asian, Mexican, fusion), large pool complex, a kids pool, a mini-water-park area, and a wide private beach with non-motorized watersports. The RIULAND kids club runs for ages 4 to 12 with daily activities included. A la carte restaurants require reservations during peak weeks but are walk-in during low season.

The beach is genuinely strong β€” a long gentle crescent with reef protection and clear water on most mornings. Ocho Rios town is close enough for a quick taxi, which matters for guests who want to do Dunn's River, Mystic Mountain, or the Nine Mile pilgrimage without a long transfer.

Riu Ocho Rios is where I send families who would otherwise go to Punta Cana on budget. It is the best beach at the price point on the north coast. Nothing more, but nothing less either.

Strengths and weaknesses

  • 01Strength: wide reef-protected beach, among the best in the price tier
  • 02Strength: RIULAND kids club included, runs daily with real programming
  • 03Strength: proximity to Dunn's River, Nine Mile, and Mystic Mountain
  • 04Weakness: 856 rooms means peak-week crowding at pools and restaurants
  • 05Weakness: room finishes are visibly dated versus same-price family resorts like Moon Palace
  • 06Weakness: service tone is efficient rather than warm

What it costs and who it suits

Riu ochorios currently runs $170 to $240 per person per night in low season and $240 to $360 in peak winter weeks. Family rooms sleep up to four and price around $360 to $520 per night for two adults plus two kids all-in. Airport transfer from Montego Bay is about 90 minutes; Ian Fleming International is closer at 30 minutes but serves fewer routes.

It suits budget-conscious families, multi-generational trips where the grandparents are splitting rooms with the parents, and couples who want north-coast beach access without paying Moon Palace or Sandals Ochi rates. It is a weaker fit for travelers who expect strong food, guests who would rate service quality above price, and adults-only couples who would be happier at RIU's Palace category properties instead.

MAPL guests at riu ochorios typically add two or three north-coast tours β€” Dunn's River with the hidden blue hole, Nine Mile heritage pilgrimage, a Blue Mountain sunrise hike β€” booked separately at /explore. The savings versus Sandals Ochi cover those tours and then some.
